Operating Room Technician (ORT) / Surgical Technician The ORT will perform surgical scrub and circulating duties for simple to complex procedures such as for a total joint replacement, major vascular procedure, craniotomies, major organ resection and thoracotomies.
Prepare the operating room suite to receive patients by assuring good sanitation practices have been completed, and acceptable surgical environment is available based on infection control standards and properly arranged equipment, supplies, and instrumentation based on procedural knowledge, surgeon preference cards, and surgeon requests.
Assist the surgeon during procedure by passing instruments, holding retractors, providing sterile supplies, and other duties as directed.
Monitor and correct breaks in aseptic technique.
Assist in draping and establishing the sterile field.
Assist in the clean up and decontamination of the sterile field to include instrumentation and supplies using standard infection control precautions.
Count instruments, sharps, and sponges with the circulating RN and maintain correct count through out the entire procedure; secure all sharps at the end of procedure by proper disposal or proper packaging to return to central material services (CMS).
Handle and manage contaminated linen and waste as outlined by the MTF SOP.
Assist in the decontamination, packaging, and sterilization of instruments.
Assist with the stocking, inventory, and checking outdates of supplies.
Obtain and assist the circulating RN with managing the specimen(s).
Respond quickly, efficiently, and effectively in emergency situations by obtaining required instrumentation and supplies.
Assist with the orientation of newly assigned personnel, 91D students, and reservists. Attend and participate in unit in-services and performance improvement committee meetings.
Chart information as required by standard operating procedures.
Operate, cleans, and maintains proper operation of steam sterilizers.
Report and correct deficiencies to include initiating equipment work orders.
Interact and coordinate with hospital staff such as the surgeons, residents, fellows, interns, medical students, nurses, anesthesia providers, and other technicians in order to fulfill the MYF patient care mission.
Able to walk extensively, stand for long hours, stoop and move freely for extended periods of time. Be able to work extended periods of time without relief and lift objects greater than 30 lbs. Good hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity, especially with hands and fingers. ORT must have accuracy in body mechanics and movements with ability to handle emergency situations requiring rapid movement and manual dexterity.
