Mather VA Hospital in Sacramento, California is recruiting fortwo (2)full-time Physician Assistants, Orthopedic Division, Surgery Department to independently provide a full range of diagnostic & therapeutic procedures and perform histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients.
PA will be expected to prescribe medication within defined scope of practice; order diagnostic studies such as lab tests, x-rays, CT scans and MRIs and consults as indicated. Incumbent screens consultations, conducts pre-operative workups, and participates in Orthopedic Clinics. Performs injections and aspirations of joints and other areas and other office orthopedic procedures. Makes daily rounds on inpatients to observe and record each patient's medical progress, updating and summarizing medical records, changing orders when appropriate, and notifying the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient's condition. Reviews Orthopedic Consultations and initiates consultations to other services. Provide telephone and digital consultation with providers seeking Orthopedic consultation- providing management and triage of orthopedic conditions. Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and medications. Arranges follow-up and manages patient's telephone/digital queries. Accountable for providing health care to veterans in accordance with individual patient needs determined by standards of adult health care practice, hospital policy and procedures in collaboration with other members of the Orthopedic Health Care Team. The responsibilities include the utilization of specialized and advance Physician Assistant skills and knowledge in patient health and illness assessment, direct care, preventive health and other duties as assigned. Will work closely with Orthopedic staff surgeons but must be able to work independently. Duties will include call and possible rotating shifts. Duties may include in assisting in surgical procedures and other actions delegated by the orthopedic surgeon. On the job training in Ortho may be a possibility for qualified Physician Assistant candidates.
Preferred Experience: Two years of experience as a practicing Physician Assistant in Orthopedics.
Drug Testing: This is a testing designated position. b. Education. The candidate must meet the following:
(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and
(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
(1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.
(2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.
d. English Language Proficiency
PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
GRADE REQUIREMENTS. In addition to the basic requirements stated in paragraph 2 above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade for appointment or promotion eligibility. Requirements for appointment or promotion to a specific grade are based on the candidate's ability to demonstrate the elements described.
a. Full Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements in paragraph 2, individuals appointed to this grade must meet all the following requirements:
(1)Experience / Education. None beyond the basic requirements in paragraph 2 of this standard.
b. Intermediate Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements under paragraph 2 above, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Full Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Individuals appointed or advanced to Intermediate Grade will have demonstrated the ability to analyze and solve more complex medical problems and meet the following requirements:
(1)Experience / Education
(a)1 year of professional practice as a PA; or
(b)Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
(c)A Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
c. Senior Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements under paragraph 2 above, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Intermediate Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Individuals appointed or advanced to Senior Grade will have demonstrated the behaviors or responsibilities listed in one or more of the following categories: Clinical Proficiency, Education, Professional Development, Management/Administrative, and Research, as applicable to the assignment
(1)Experience / Education
(a) 3 years of professional practice as a PA; or
(b) 2 years of professional practice as a PA and successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
(c )2 years of professional practice as a PA and a Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or
(d) A Doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.
d. Chief Grade
(1) General. Chief grade is restricted to selected leadership positions. The individual's qualifications as well as the scope and complexity of the assignment are considered.
(2) Education. The preferred minimum education for this grade is a master's degree from a PA training program certified by the ARC-PA or a master's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science and a baccalaureate degree from a PA training program certified by the ARC-PA. However, experience as a PA may be substituted for the master's degree where the individual has an equivalent knowledge of the profession and has successfully undertaken difficult or complex clinical, administrative, research and/or educational assignments which have required an unusual degree of leadership and competence.
(3) Experience. Professional practice characterized by progressively more responsible leadership assignments in clinical, administrative, educational and/or research areas. An individual can demonstrate these abilities after approximately 8 years of practice as a PA. Practice must have consistently demonstrated all of the following behaviors (if applicable to the assignment):
(a) Establishes and maintains relationships within the service, with facility management and other services that result in improved patient care.
(b) Accepts substantial and continuing responsibility and accountability for planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling a complex integrated health care program.
(c) Makes decisions which serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of PAs within the local institution and the total health care system.
(d) Participates in long range program planning and model development for effective delivery of health services.
(e) Facilitates the delivery of patient care in collaboration with health professionals, health managers and other health care personnel.
(f) Assures implementation, maintenance and compliance with standards of professional practice of all health care personnel within the program.
