The Surgical Techmust meet the following qualifications:
Education: Successful completion of OR Tech training program
Licensure/Certification: American Heart Association BLS
Experience: Minimum of 2 years Surgical Tech experience (required). Experience in an acute multi-specialty environment (preferred).
The Surgical Tech’sresponsibilities include:
Demonstrating compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and taking action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and reporting suspected violations.
Demonstrating and maintaining aseptic technique according to the policies and procedures of Surgical Services.
Demonstrating competency and knowledge of the surgical environment regarding traffic patterns and contamination of the sterile field.
Anticipating surgeons needs by reviewing preference card and procuring appropriate supplies prior to start of case.
Maintaining orderly instrument table and surgical field.
Remaining attentive to the progression of the case in order to anticipate surgeon’s needs.
Verbally verifying and labeling medications and irrigations on the back table with perioperative nurse.
Maintaining and documenting accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the perioperative nurse.
Properly disposing of all sharps and biohazardous waste.
Accurately identifying surgical specimen and transferring to the perioperative nurse.
Preparing instruments for cleaning and resterilization.
Assists with putting away supplies and room turnover.
Contributing to maximum efficiency of the surgical line up in order to adhere to surgical start times.
Keeping current with new intraoperative techniques and equipment through participation in unit based and continuing education.
Demonstrating cost effectiveness by using judgment when opening and using supplies.
Acting as a preceptor to new staff and students.
Serving as a role model to new employees and other staff members. Coaching team to anticipate resources.
Communicating effectively with patients, staff members and physicians.
Assuming responsibility for self and ensures that the policies, procedures and safety practices of the Operating Room and Hospital are reinforced.
Using critical thinking to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
Accepting responsibilities only within scope of practice.
Performing other duties as assigned.
