Assists surgeons during operative and invasive procedures under the direct supervision of licensed nursing personnel. Assures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure.

Responsibilities: 1) Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation 2) Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy related to the procedures 3) Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of asepsis and consistently maintains a sterile technique. Monitors for and calls attention to breaks in technique. Communicates to the circulating RN and surgeons any breaks in technique 4) Ensures all necessary equipment is in the room prior to the start of a case 5) Able to safely operate all electro-surgical, diagnostic, video equipment, disposable equipment, as well as equipment unique to each specialty area. Updates and rewrites preference cards as indicated. Communicates preference card additions to the appropriate specialty resource person. 6) Handles all surgical specimens appropriately. 7) In conjunction with the RN, conducts accurate sponge, needle and instrument counts according to departmental policies 8) Accepts assignment as preceptor for new staff. Trains and assists turnover personnel with operating room protocol and procedures for new and existing team members. 9) Able to assemble and troubleshoot all equipment as necessary for the procedure 10) Demonstrates proper care and handling of instruments and equipment in all areas of the department 11) Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of the Perioperative team, inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s ability to meet its goals and objectives. 12) Perform other duties as assigned. Must be HIPAA compliant.
Qualifications: • Minimum Education: High school graduate or equivalent preferred. Graduation from a formal accredited surgical technician training program or trained in-house • Minimum Work Experience: Prefer minimum one year of work experience in the Operating Room • Required Licenses/Certifications: BLS Certification. CO State Registration required. Surgical Technologist Certification preferred • Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively. Must show initiative, maturity and effectiveness in dealing with people • Working Environment: Works in temperature controlled environment. Walks on carpet and tile surfaces. May be exposed to wet surfaces during walking. May be exposed to sharps, pharmaceuticals, infectious material and unpredictable behavior of patients. • Essential Physical Requirement: Ability to lift 65 lbs, Carry 55 lbs, and Push/Pull 60 lbs. Overhead lifting of 30 lbs. Able to perform repetitive standing, sitting, stooping, walking, stretching, and reaching.
