Job Description Scope of Position Focus for care is women and infant?s health. Labor and Delivery (L&D) provides 24-hour inpatient and outpatient care to high risk/low risk obstetrical patients and outpatient gynecology patients and immediate stabilization of the newborn. The Surgical Technologist (ST) functions as an integral member of a team of care providers in the Labor and Delivery Operating Rooms at the OSU Wexner Medical Center. The surgical teams reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm and mutual respect. The team, consisting of the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Patient Care Coordinator - Registered Nurse (PCC-RN), Surgical Technologist (ST), Student Surgical Tech (SST), and Anesthesia Technician, provide patient care and supportive services that are directed towards achievement of maximizing patient care outcomes, improving customer service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization and decreasing costs. Patients and their family will experience the benefits of patient focused care through the integrated skills of all care team members. Position Summary The ST performs technical skills related to intraoperative patient care. The ST is generally assigned to perform the scrub role in various surgical procedures and also performs routine unit tasks. They provide emergency care measures as appropriate, and assist in meeting the patient's emotional needs. The ST follows universal precautions, safe handling guidelines, and all other infection control standards. They provide for safety/security of self and others and follow special precautions as related to patient care. They maintain a clean/organized perioperative unit. The ST promotes a positive attitude to staff, families, and patient/guests as well as maintains patient confidentiality. The ST is an unclassified professional staff position working under direct supervision of PCC-RN and under the general supervision of the Labor and Delivery Managers. The ST performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective without compromising quality of care, meets hospital continuing education and certification requirements, and upholds goals and objectives of the Department of Labor and Delivery. The ST contributes to organizational effectiveness and demonstrates career growth and development. The ST works variable rotating shifts as assigned. The ST provides care to the antepartum, intrapartum and operative patient under the supervision of the RN-PCC and is responsible for specified unit services including but not limited to: scrubbing; assisting physicians; providing direct care; maintaining supplies and equipment for the procedure, L&D, and Maternal Special Care (MSC) rooms; performing adjunct or ?in lieu of? UCA responsibilities. Overall responsibilities are under the supervision of the Nurse Manager. Minimum Education Required HS Graduate or Equivalent or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Qualifications Must be a high school graduate or possess the GED, and must have completed formal Surgical Technology Training Program or the equivalent. Previous experience in the Operating Room as Surgical Technologist is preferred.
