The Surgical Technician is a member of the surgical team at VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The incumbent will provide assistance to the surgeon and other team members during, surgical procedures, The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Functions as the primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies and equipment; Performs skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples and cutting sutures; Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical setups such as lasers, microscopes, air-powered, fiber optic, and laparoscopic equipment; Performs sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy; Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, and other members of the surgical team; Provides guidance, support, and supervision to Operating Room Nursing Assistants and other technicians, as assigned; Reinforces, teaches, and conducts training activities that instruct staff in Operating Room procedures; Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures; Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure; Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration; Utilizes universal safety precautions when handling specimens, supplies and equipment; Maintains equipment and work areas; Performs non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions; Plans and discusses each surgical procedure with members of the surgical team and ensures all supplies and equipment are available; Assists the surgical team in quality improvement activities; Understands the concepts and applicability of the Joint Commission, Occupational Safety Health and Administration(OSHA) and all agency safety and occupational health regulations. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7am - 5:30pm and 10:30am - 9pm, with a rotating day off and flexibility to meet the needs of the unit.
