We are seeking a CARDIOVASCULAR RN FIRST ASSISTANT in Wausau, WI at Aspirus Wausau Hospital who provides exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation while optimizing results for our patients. Essential elements in the art and science of first assisting are attention to detail, thoroughness, and complete concentration on the operative field. These activities will only be performed as delegated tasks under the direct and immediate supervision of the responsible cardio-thoracic surgeon.
The Registered Nurse First Assistant has advanced training in first assistant studies with completion of formal course work and/or exams related to this profession. This training and certification are recognized and approved by AORN; The RN First Assistant (RNFA) Standards of Practice.
The terms “first assisting” and “surgical assisting” are used interchangeably and relate specifically to intra-operative procedure assisting.
Surgeries performed are as follows: AVR/Aortic Surgery, Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement, Off Pump CABG, Complex Atrial Fibrillation Surgery, TAVR/MitraClip and Lung Surgery.
Has advanced knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and operative technique related to the operative procedure in which the RNFA will assist.
Possesses ability to apply principles of asepsis and infection control.
Possesses ability to perform effectively in stressful and emergency situations.
Possesses ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate preventive and corrective actions.
Possesses ability to perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the operative team.
Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose.
Possesses ability to demonstrate skills in behaviors unique to the First Assistant.
ACLS desired - American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course or the American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course including a hands-on skills practice session with an AHA ACLS or PALS instructor or by using a voice assisted manikin (VAM) system.
Maintains current knowledge of ANA standards, AORN standards and recommended practices and position statements.
At least two years of perioperative nursing experience.
Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) designation
Certified Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) certification
Active Wisconsin RN license
Current BLS certification or obtained within 90 days of hire
Hours: 1.0 full-time, 40 hours every week. Shifts include 6:30am - 3:00pm Monday - Friday. Call and back up call is 2-3 times per week. Weekend call is every 4th weekend. 20 minute call response time is required.
