This Health Technician - Surgical Technologist, located at the Oklahoma City VA Healthcare system, is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist participates with the surgical team members including surgeons, anesthesia providers, registered nurses, and other members of an operating room team in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Major duties of the GS-0640-06, Health Technician - Surgical Technologist include but are not limited to: Functioning as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures Preparing and maintaining sterile field with all required items for each procedure Planning and discussing each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure Providing surgical scrub on all procedures, including minor and major surgeries Preparing, organizing, and maintaining highly complex sterile surgical setups Utilizing standard precautions and following all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment Assisting team members with care of the patient, (i.e., positioning, transporting, prepping, draping and obtaining supplies) Handling all specimens appropriately Performing sponge, sharps, and instrument counts to verify accuracy per facility policy and procedures, with the circulating Registered Nurse (RN); accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure Assisting the surgeon by performing such procedures as holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures; preparing prosthesis and Surgical devices during procedures Assisting in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new Operating Room (OR) staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures Functioning as the second circulator for complex surgical procedures Performing non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions Maintaining OR area Assessing equipment needs and maintains adequate stock of supplies and materials; recognizing potentially hazardous situations and takes corrective action and notifies supervisor Providing guidance and support to Nursing Assistants and other Surgical Technicians; supervising volunteers, aides, non-surgical team members, students, and other personnel Providing guidance and support to professional and technical students of an approved surgical technology program Assisting surgical team members in quality improvement activities Updating personal knowledge regarding current trends in surgical technology through continuing education courses Assisting with the creation of surgical preference card, including regular review and update of the preference cards to ensure efficiency and reduce waste Work Schedule: The work schedule for this this permanent, full-time position varies, based on the needs of the service.
