The Surgical Technologist on the Orthopaedic Upper Extremity Service will:
Provides support to the surgeon and other surgical team members by performing direct and indirect tasks which facilitate and contribute to quality care, efficient through-put and a satisfactory experience for patients undergoing elective hip and knee arthroplasty procedures.
May assist scrub person as a technical expert for joint arthroplasty.
Functions under the direct personal supervision of a resident or attending surgeon.
Assist anesthesia with patient transportation and providing patient comfort during induction.
Collaborate with nursing on the opening of all sterile supplies needed for cases.
Participate with medical staff and nursing to position patients to prevent injury.
Pass or passively hold retractors.
Accurately sterilize implants, instruments, et cetera as needed.
Help gown surgical teams and monitor surgical aseptic environment.
Provide support during the case of finding and retrieving supplies.
Prepare OR with specialty instruments as needed for cases.
Assist in picking cases and finding missing instruments.
Perform or assist with the surgical prep of the patient.
Clean OR as needed.
Assist with OR stocking as needed.
Deliver pathology/microbiology specimens as needed.
Demonstrate appropriate infection control and universal precautions.
Run Bowie dick and attests as needed to ensure the autoclaves are running correctly.
Serve and participate on hospital wide councils/department staff meetings as directed.
Actively participate and in seminars/grand rounds to continually update knowledge.
Assist midlevel provider with the preparation of preoperative booklets and the patient teaching class.
Assist midlevel provider and secretarial staff in preparation and processing O.T./P.T. req., Radiography req., disability, insurance and other patient related documents, under the supervision of attending staff.
Accepts accountability for own actions. Be self-directed and show initiative, maintain a positive approach with staff and patients.
Receive and process phone messages, communicate pertinent information appropriable.
Maintain a positive outlook and contribute to a forward thinking cohesive Lower Extremity Reconstruction (LER) Team.
Assist midlevel provider, residents, secretarial staff and attending in organizing the weekly surgery schedule.
Take responsibility for a quality care experience for patients on the LER service and creatively contribute to the processes involved.
High schoool diploma or equivalent.
Completion of an accredited or military Surgical Technologist program.
Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written.
Excellent customer service skills.
Previous health care experience.
Previous OR experience
Certification from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA
Completion of medical terminology training.
Ability to multi-task with ease.
Ability to work flexible hours when necessary.
Bachelors Degree in Health Sciences
