The Surgical Technologist (ST) functions as an integral member of a team of care providers in the Operating Rooms of the Perioperative Services at the OSU Medical Center. The surgical teams reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm and mutual respect. The team, consisting of the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Registered Nurses (Circulator), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Surgical Technologist (ST), Perioperative Technician, Anesthesia Technician, Resident Physicians, Interns, and sometimes medical students and nursing students. These individuals provide patient care and supportive services that are directed towards achievement of maximizing patient care outcomes, improving customer service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization and decreasing costs utilizing the Synergy Model of nursing practice when giving patient care Patients and their family will experience the benefits of patient focused care through the integrated skills of all care team members.
Position Summary The ST performs technical skills related to intraoperative patient care. The ST is generally assigned to perform the scrub role in various surgical procedures and also performs routine unit tasks. They provide emergency care measures as appropriate within their scope, and assist in meeting the patient's emotional needs. The ST follows universal precautions, safe handling guidelines, and all other infection control standards. They provide for safety/security of self and others and follow special precautions as related to patient care. They maintain a clean/organized sterile field, operating room and perioperative unit. The ST promotes a positive attitude to physicians, all OSU staff, families, and patients/guests as well as maintaining patient confidentiality within the HIPPA guidelines. The ST is an unclassified professional staff position working under direct supervision of the RN and under the general supervision of Perioperative Managers / Leadership. The ST performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective without compromising quality of care, meets hospital continuing education and certification requirements, upholds goals and objectives of the Department of Perioperative Services. The ST contributes to organizational effectiveness and demonstrates career growth and development. The ST may work variable rotating shifts as assigned. Call may be assigned on a rotating basis. Week-ends and Holidays may be assigned in some locations.
Minimum Education Required HS Graduate or Equivalent
Required Qualifications Must be a high school graduate or possess the GED, and must have completed formal Surgical Technology Training Program or the equivalent. Previous experience in the Operating Room as Surgical Technologist is preferred.
