Prepares surgical field, equipment/instrumentation, for surgical procedures; performs any assigned duties under the direction and supervision of a licensed registered nurse in accordance with AORN Standards of Practice, of Surgical Technologist Standards and other healthcare members as deemed necessary to ensure quality patient care.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Scrub surgical procedures; ability to function on an emergency basis, collaboration with physicians.
Assumes Surgical Scrub duties under the direction of the RN, AORN standards:
Scrubs, gowns and gloves.
Maintains sterile environment at all times during set up and procedure.
Sets up table, instruments and supplies according to scheduled operation.
Assists with the preparation and draping of patient.
Assists and anticipates the needs of the Surgeon and use of instrumentation, sutures, sponges and supplies.
Observes patient for changes in physical status and assists with emergency procedures as needed.
Performs correct sponge, needle and instrument count with the circulating RN according to unit policy.
Assists the circulating RN in care and labeling of surgical specimens.
Assists in the application of dressings and casts.
Assists with cleaning surgical suite after each case.
Knowledge/safe use of medications on the surgical field.
May assume circulating nurse duties as assigned, under the direction of the RN.
Obtains all supplies needed by the patient, surgeon or anesthesiologist.
Obtains special equipment when needed.
Maintains correct positioning of patient during case.
Assists with moving patients from surgical table as needed.
Maintains hospital and patient confidentiality.
Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA Safety Policies and Universal Precautions.
Effective response in emergency surgical situations.
Maintains effective working relationships.
Ability to adapt to change rapidly. Flexibility in staffing/emergency standby to meet patient needs.
Demonstrates competence in relation to the defined mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the organization. This will be apparent by ongoing completion of any or all of the following: proficiency testing, skill demonstration, practice of core standards for service excellence, and documentation review.
LPNs must have an active OSBN license as an LPN.
LPNs will be trained within the department to meet all above requirements
Completion of a formal Operating Room Technician course and 1 year previous surgical experience; Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
